During the coronavirus pandemic, peak internet traffic grew by 47%

It was assumed that in 2019-2020 the growth rate of peak traffic will be 28%.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-2020, the total Internet capacity increased by 35% - from 450 Tbps to over 600 Tbps. Such data are presented on the Global Internet Map for the current year from TeleGeography, a global telecommunications market research company.

During the specified period, the peak indicator of the Internet capacity reached 300 Tbit / s. Over the past several years, peak traffic has increased by an average of 30% annually. It was assumed that in 2019-2020 the growth rate of peak traffic will be 28%, however, due to the pandemic, it reached 47%.

The largest growth in the capacity of the global network during the pandemic was observed in Europe. The most loaded Internet exchange points in 2020 were once again DE-CIX FRA (Frankfurt, Germany) and AMS-IX (Amsterdam, Netherlands). Peak traffic in these countries averaged about 7 Tbit / s. Despite this, in 2020, the number of new Internet exchange points commissioned was the lowest in the last five years.
